On macs you can open multiple projects in tabs instead of single windows with IntelliJ thanks to an OS functionality.
Set the System Preferences > General > Prefer tabs to always.
Then try to open multiple projects in IntelliJ. You will see them opening in tabs :)
I haven’t found this functionality under Windows or Linux so far.
